Transcripts Open Thread: How Will You Benefit from Community Transcripts? #CTP

Many people will benefit from our Community Transcripts Project. How will you benefit from our transcripts? How will people you know benefit from transcripts? How will we all benefit from our transcripts? 

People Who Will Benefit from Our Transcripts:

• Down-ballot candidates and their supporters. 
• Progressive activists and their supporters. 
• People with many types of temporary or permanent disabilities and impairments (hearing, vision, cognitive).
• Creators, bloggers, reporters, editors, producers, students, and scholars who will be able to easily incorporate quotes in their writings.
• People who access web content via limited cellular data plans or dial-up connections.
• People who cannot listen to recordings due to time constraints and pressing priorities.
• People with visual memories who learn better by reading than by watching or listening.
• People who cannot participate at all without transcripts. 
• People whose livelihood depends on transcripts. 
• People whose acoustic environment prohibits the playing of videos due to employment, a sleeping or sound-sensitive family member or roommate, and/or sound pollution.  
• Information seekers. Transcripts make video content accessible to search engines and automated web-archiving tools.
• People who do not speak or understand spoken English well and who depend on web translation to access information.
• Members of Daily Kos  who are paid to create transcripts.

Question of the Day

Which of these categories apply to you? Some will have many reasons. Please tell us your stories. Tell us of the deaf activist you know, etc. Your stories will help us build community.

“[T]he answer I chose in the poll had to do with time constraints for videos. If I click on a video and see that it’s a half hour or hour, and especially if I know it’s at a campaign rally where a chunk of that time will be applause and chanting breaks, a transcript makes it much easier and faster to get the meat of the speech. It doesn’t help as much when the speaker is a great orator like Barack Obama and his tone and comedic timing get lost in a dry transcript, but I can skim a transcript and I can’t really skim a video." "This is a great project. I'm writing to tell you my more-than-one answer to the poll. The one I clicked is the blogger ... scholar. I am a linguist and discourse analyst, and transcripts of anything are the heart of most things I do. But I also think of myself as at least a part-time progressive activist.
